Hurdy-gurdy
|
Anna Clemenger Peekstok has performed, toured,
and recorded for more than two decades with the hurdy-gurdy, an
ancient stringed instrument that uses a crank, wooden wheel, and
keyboard to produce a haunting, eerie sound similar to that of
a bagpipe. As one-half of the multi-instrumental duo Telynor, she
was known for a signature blend of early and traditional European
music performed with, according to one reviewer, “an energy
and fire that one might associate with the blues or even rock.”
She is a founding member of the Over the Water Hurdy-Gurdy Association,
has taught workshops at the group’s annual festival, and
taken instruction there from some of the most celebrated hurdy-gurdy
players in Europe. In addition to her arranging, performing, and
producing work on Telynor’s four CDs, she has played on stage
in the U.S. and Canada in a variety of venues, including coffeehouses,
festivals, and concert halls, and has worked as a studio musician
for both local and national recording artists.
She has degrees from the University of Virginia and the University
of Washington, and lives in Seattle.
